What is a hernia?
According to the NHS, a hernia occurs when an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the muscle or surrounding tissue wall. Your muscles are usually strong and tight enough to keep your intestines and organs in place, but a hernia can develop if there are any weak spots. An inguinal hernia is the most common type of hernia, and may appear as a swelling or lump in your groin, and can be painful. The lump often appears when you’re lifting something and disappears when you lie down. An inguinal hernia usually happens when fatty tissue or a part of the bowel, such as the intestine, pokes through into your groin at the top of your inner thigh. It pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle wall (the abdominal wall) into an area called the inguinal canal. Most are thought to be caused by ageing, although they can happen at any age. This is because as you age, the muscles surrounding the abdomen can weaken.
Dealing with hernia pain can have a serious impact on your daily activities. Hernia pain may go away when you press on the bulge or lie down flat on your back. A hernia belt or truss such as the OPPO Hernia Support 2249 provides support and applies gentle compression to the affected area, pressing the hernia back inside the abdomen to provide pain relief. Surgery is often recommended if the hernia causes severe pain, or there are persistent symptoms or serious complications develop.
If you think you have a hernia, we recommend a medical professional is consulted as soon as possible to confirm diagnosis and provide the most appropriate treatment.
